Board exams will include 30 percent competency-based questions

Questions that test applying a concept will make up 30 percent of papers from next year.

Key points

  • What happened and why it matters.
  • Who is affected first.
  • What to watch for next.

The board says the change will begin with classes 10 and 12 in 2027. Teachers will get workshops this term.

Competency-based questions ask students to apply a concept to a real situation, such as reading a bus timetable in maths or comparing two news reports in social science. They replace some recall questions.

The board will publish 2,000 practice questions on its site this month, and teachers will receive two-day training workshops. The marking scheme for the remaining 70 percent stays unchanged.
